September 2009 marked Melvyn
Wallhead’s graduation to the coveted
Yachtmaster® Offshore title and then the
launch of ‘Northumbria Sailing’,
Now it will be the turn of others to gain a
formal qualification, often delayed due
to the absence of good, local, facilities.
An extensive range of RYA Courses are
on offer, Theory and Practical, up to
Yachtmaster level.
Look out for practical demonstrations during theory
courses!
Courses take place in a variety of venues, according to
numbers. Candidates either join a class or take advantage of
‘tailored tuition’, where teaching is on a one/two to one
basis at times and venues to suit.
Day Skipper has been the most popular and some have
achieved the advanced Coastal/Yachtmaster status, in
theory as I tell them.
Here are some happy sailors at the Heaton
Theory centre where lucky fellows can take
their Course in comfort – warm and cosy!
If you take a bit longer to assimilate then
extra time is an option – teacher wants you
to succeed. (perhaps it’s because pupils
then take more of my Courses!)

There’s even some fun time at the Sailor’s
Dinner, getting instruction and practical
experience in what all sailors are good at.
Then they are asked to take the Queen’s
Shilling…….

to the Orkneys this year. Pretty popular
it is too.
RYA Day Skipper Practical Courses are
now timetabled for the Summer, and
later too, for the tough;
We are sailor’s tough and hardy
All night long we love to Party….
More at home, boat tuition is popular,
which can be a present for your ‘nearest
and dearest’, or anyone else for that
matter.

An evening at the Quayside, Ouseburn, for
September’s Soirée. A great spot in summer
and ‘Lian’ berthed there too, complete with
bunting.
On the eve of the third highest predicted tide
for the next 15 years, and the lowest too!
